The ACVV (Afrikaanse Christelike Vrouevereniging) invited me to talk at their Seniors Club in Sidwell.
It was the club's 21st birthday celebration and some members joined in the vibe and dressed in their 90's clothes.Others listened attentively as I tried to convince them of the quality of such garments, the pleasure of sourcing them, the nostalgic and economic value etc, but quite a number said: "Ons sal dit nie dra nie, nie oor ons dooie liggame nie..."
I took one of my old brown cardboard suitcases, packed with a variety of garments representing styles from the sixties onwards, to demonstrate how snazzy one can look with the right hat and accessories added. Two near 70-year-old models had a ball of a time showing off some of the garments.
In the spirit of Spring, I wore my grey Trilobal dress with broad flower border, topped with a modern (rather small) pure wool pink Benneton jersey. To add to the fun image, I took a few pairs of clip-on earrings and some plastic beads. The hat cost R5 from Hospice and the flower trim another R5. My navy shoes are Green Cross and very comfortable - bought new 7 years ago.
